The top 10 list of companies with patent filings reveals some interesting names, such as BANK OF AMERICA as the top player, as well as COINPLUG, ALIBABA, IBM and MASTERCARD and other players.
TOP 10 LIST
|1||BANK OF AMERICA||45|
|9||HANGZHOU FUZAMEI TECHNOLOGY||19|
|10||HANGZHOU YUNPHANT NETWORK TECHNOLOGY||18|
The top assignee BANK OF AMERICA with a total patent count of 45 patent families entered the domain in year 2013 and has increased their annual filing each year (23 new patent applications filed just in year 2016).
The second top player ETIC HOLDINGS has a total count of 42 patent applications. All of the 42 patent applications were initially filed in 2016, most of them with the British Patent Office. It appears that EITC HOLDINGS is intimately related to NCHAIN HOLDINGS (which is actually formerly known as EITC HOLDINGS), and that many of the initial filings by EITC HOLDING in Great Britain has been filed as international PCT applications in the name of NCHAIN HOLDINGS. NCHAIN HOLDINGS is a company built around the research of Craig Wright (who has claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto) and focuses on blockchain research and development. As previously reported by Reuters in April 2017, NCHAIN HOLDINGS has been sold to a private equity firm.
The third top player COINPLUG, which provides a Digital Asset Exchange platform, has consistently filed a large number of patent applications, especially in the last two years.
Interestingly, several Chinese companies can be found in the top 10 list, and it turns out that even more Chinese companies are present in the top 50 and top 100 lists. In fact, the geographic information from the patent databases reveals that almost 50% of the total number of patent applications in the field of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies originates from China.
